Our First Blog
It is October 6th, 2009 – the first day of a new angle on a very old story.
It is also a first attempt at blogging. There has been no coaching on how to use this but then someone once said, “Getting started is half the battle”.
I feel half-victorious already. I am embarking on a journalistic journey of which I do not know the confines or restraints or even the experiences or exploits. I rarely read blogs and don’t even know what blog means. I have set no parameters and intend to learn as I go along. I do not know how often I will blog nor do I have a set itinerary for the subject matter. However, destiny has brought me to this place and I have never been more certain that I am to be doing what I am at this point in my life. I am on a mission. That mission is simply to tell the story of my Dad; a story that has been long forgotten by most, but is of paramount importance, historically.
I will no doubt make mistakes and apologies but I will never apologize for the premise of this forgotten story which is based on facts: Both first-hand knowledge and referenced material. I do not consider myself a scholarly person though I have been educated in three different colleges to which I hold no degree. Therefore, I will not be the finest writer you will have ever read but I do promise you this… I will bring to you a substantial literary contribution with this forgotten story.
My name is DeVaux Shane Andrews and I am the younger of two sons of a man named Glen Daniel Andrews Sr. This blog will primarily be a reflection of his legacy: His memories, his writings, his experiences and expertise. It is also advertising for a book coming out soon called An Impossible Cast (co-authored by myself and a good friend named Jeremy Miller) that highlights Glen and the history of professional sport fishing. Jeremy is a grad student at KU in Lawrence, Kansas and will contribute to this blog as well, from time to time.
Stay in touch with this blog for information and pictures regarding the man that Jerry McKinnis, host of the 40+years outdoor show The Fishin’ Hole, said is: “simply the greatest bass fisherman I’ve ever known, and I’ve known them all”.
On the web . . .

Great 1st article on a great sports hero!
Great 1st entry on the 1st blog comment!
Looks good Shane!
Best wishes Shane on this new adventure! I too am looking forward to the book.
I still remember when my mother told Jeff (my younger brother) and I that our cousin, Glen, had become the World Champion Fisherman! We sat in our living room and kept repeating – “Wow, The World Champion! Wow, Mom. The World Champion!” I’m so pleased that you are writing the story.
Thank you Kathy. Spread the word to those you know and those who will listen. Forward the email to everyone you can and make sure the link works (my first bug!). By the way, the book is done. We’re just fine tuning the end result. I’ve already seen what the cover is going to look like.
Love from the hillbilly Andrews’
I’m really looking forward to reading your book. I have family that currently is in tournament fishing! Good luck Shane!
You might want to let them know about this. The information in the book is of extreme importance to history. Not to mention it is a bit of a “Rocky” read.
Shane it is with infinite appreciation and well wishes for you on your book. I can honestly say being a neighbor for years to you, your parents and sisters in the famed Rosewood Addition it is the neatest thing seeing your book. I can still remember the day your father had us stand together with a cigarette between our mouths and he snatched it out from yards away with the fishing pole and line with the plastic practice thing on the end of it. To this day I can still remember it as it has just happened again. I stood in aw and still do to this day. Not only is Glen a championship fisherman he is a most wonderful man that as a kid I truly enjoyed talking with. You, your mom and entire family are wonderful people and I just want to say that what you have done is incredible. It is not only a credit to you but it is a signal for generations to come that not only can a father live his dream but a son can too. Congratulations Shane I look forward to the day I have your book in my hands. Take care and best wishes to you and your family. Love Always, Michael Curtis
Great addition to our blog. Thank you Michael. Good times.

Of course, I intend to invite the whole town of Rogers when I get there. It will be a great time. Thank you for your support.
Very well done. If your first attempt at blogging is any indication, I’m sure your first book will do well. Let me know when it comes out.
That’s my friend Alan Burch, sci-fi author extraordinaire. You can reach him through his email. alansandy@dluxlink.com
Hi Shane! Looks great. Congratulations!!! I’ll always believe there was a bit of divine intervention that caused our paths to cross earlier this year. As you know, I lived in Little Rock during the 60’s and often fished at Lake Maumelle. It was there that I met Jerry McKinnis and shot some of the very first “Fishin’ Hole” programs with him. Through Jerry I met your Dad and among Arkansas fishermen, Glen was a living legend even then. No one could beat him in any of the tournaments. A highlight of my young fishing years was the day I came into the dock with some big bass when Jerry and Glen had struck out. I can assure you that it only happened once! For decades, I have tried to catch up with your Dad, and through that aforementioned intervention, our paths crossed and now I know. Equally important I made a great new friend—you!I’m so pleased that you have made this effort to get Glen’s story out there and to make sure he is never forgotten. I can’t wait to get my copy of the book!
Bass wishes to you and your Dad,
Gary Clark
Thank you Gary. I too, believe that things are happening for a reason. I am so pleased that you have seen and responded to this blog. You are a wonderful advocate for our cause and you will not be forgotten for that. Thank you for everything.
Shane
Shane: Great info and insight on this topic. Not too many good books out there that talk about the greats in the fishing world. We hear a lot today of the current great fishermen but not of those that started this great endeavor. I hope to hear more good things on this book and look forward as I do a lot of tournament fishing myself here in Texas. It was great to talk to you about some of those that started this sport and I believe you will give more understanding about its history.
Jake! What an honor to have you grace our blog. Thank you for your wonderful comments and we promise not to disappoint. On this blog we intend to honor as many greats as possible with bios and their accolades as best we can research. The book speaks about a lot of them including your own Jackie Hewlett the Great. Dad said he was his greatest competitor of that time. For anyone reading this blog you need to understand that Jackie was a founding father of one of the oldest bass clubs in the U.S. that is still proudly in existence. May everyone know that isn’t just anyone who wrote that comment above, that is Jake Jakubowsky of the Austin Bass Club who has known most of the greatest bassers of Texas.
Thanks again Jake!
Shane:
The angling world is pleased indeed that you and Jeremy Miller crafted this fine biography of your father.
May 2010 be a bountiful one for you,
Ned Kehde
Shane,
What an incredible gift to your dad. This recognition is long overdue and I, for one am truly touched that you have honored your dad in this way. He is indeed the greatest bass fisherman to ever grace our lives. Ozzie was very blessed to have your dad as his personal bass fishing instructor. May God bless you all and also the sell of this book. Can hardly wait to read it.
